Ames-based trio Ktop (formerly Kountertop) has been working with the folks at Sound Farm Studios over the last few months, and I recently had a chance to listen to three freshly-recorded tracks from those sessions. Although what Ktop brings to the table is not overly innovative – they describe themselves as garage/alt rock – they do what they do very well and have put together some great tracks that will hopefully be expanded to an album in the coming months.
“Taken In” was my favorite of the three tracks, featuring some great vocal harmonies over some nicely-balanced bass, guitar and drum work. The song is catchy, and that is a term I would use to describe “Push to Touch” and “Drying Out” as well. They have found a song-writing formula that works for them and taken it to its apex.
The recording quality on these cuts is top of the line, and the band says they plan on doing three to six more tracks at the Sepanic’s studio before the end of the year. Although the band hasn’t officially announced plans for a full-length release, simple arithmetic suggests nine or so of these songs could easily come together on a CD before too long.
Ktop will likely perform some of these new compositions Thursday, Sept. 10, when they play an all ages show at The House of Bricks in Des Moines at 6 p.m. If their live show comes anywhere near the quality of these three tracks, they are definitely worth checking out. |
