Live Show Review: Kountertop
Written by Greater Des Moines Music Coalition
Saturday, 07 June 2008
After a couple hours of casual music listeners trickling in on Friday evening, Kountertop took over the stage and Peoples on Court swelled to near capacity. The band – an Iowa favorite – got the crowd moving with a few propulsive original songs that easily persuaded their large group of followers to immediately take the dance floor.
Nick Erickson (guitar, vocals), Scott Erickson (drums) and Nate Guess (bass, vocals) have been rocking together in and around the state for over a decade, playing shows that are as fun as a three-day weekend in the summertime. Their alternative rock/garage sound filled every inch of the venue, and drifted out windows and down stairs, convincing undecided passers-by to spend the evening a few flights up.
After awakening the growing crowd with popular tunes of their own, such as Takes You Away and Bend You, Kountertop sealed the deal with an impressive slew of covers varying from Bon Jovi to Deadeye Dick.
Kountertop never fails to pack a show and last Friday was no exception. Some listeners traveled over an hour to see the band play, a commonality among many of their fans.
Opening for Kountertop was Inebriated Saints, another rock group that showcased amazing guitar work and a remarkable selection of classic rock covers which included Hendrix, Pink Floyd and Cream.
A young band of only six months, Adam Brimeyer (guitar), Michael J. DiMarco (bass/vox) and Mike Duff (drums) captivated the early audience with soulful rock and high-volume guitar.
Stage veterans, Kountertop took no time to attest they were worth the $5 cover. Playing long sets and taking short breaks, they kept the crowd dancing until the lights came on.
The band’s sociable persona and approachability keeps them a Des Moines favorite. It is certain the only thing that could have made the show better would have been a last call for alcohol at 3am instead of 1:30.

When we heard that a group called KOUNTERTOP was going to open for
Foreigner, Kansas & John Waite...We said WHO?
I tell you what, the sound from these guys was awesome..PEOPLE in route to
get beer STOPPED WHAT THEY WERE DOING to listen to these guys play.
What a great way to lead into one of the nicest and most talented musicians
we have ever run across (John Waite)...Even John Waite made a comment on
stage: "WHO WERE THOSE GUYS?"
Great band, Great Kids (I'm Old), Great Music!
